Ubufox replacement/ discontinue?

Bug description:
Ubufox is an old style add-on that from my understanding will stop
working in the Firefox 53/54 timeframe.
Is there interest in making a new style add-on or should whatever
changes we want be incorporated directly (see if we can add a blurb to
the Firefox home page instead of making our own, etc).
If we end up discontinuing it we, need to reset the users homepage (if
it's the default) before we go.
Also likely has an impact on bugs like:
