No sound after Ubuntu 12.04 install

Bug description:
My sound settings for output is showing Digital Output (S/PDIF) while
I am thinking this should be (Speaker) however, there is nowhere to
change it. The Alsa mixer confirms S/PDIF zero audio levels and this
cannot be changed.
