I experienced similar on my desktop yesterday. No sound when BT speaker
selected. Although I didn't unplug the power from the desktop :)

I think I need to ignore that though because the BT dongle on my desktop
is super-cheap and buggy compared to laptops. It has kernel issues that
then ripple into everything else.

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  New

  1. Connect a laptop to a power supply
  2. Pair a BT speaker
  3. Play some music with VLC
  4. Disconnect the laptop from AC to switch to battery

  The music continues playing
