Public bug reported:

A few weeks ago, my speakers stopped playing sound, when I tried to view
online videos from youtube and/or facebook, as well as saved videos on
my computer via vlc. I do get sound from headphones though.

I have tried to follow the troubleshooting guide on ubuntu's help page,
but I have had little success. In addition to this I opened a previous question
to launchpad (#650544), and got a few things to try from someone there. None of
which have fixed the issue.
