This is due to missing facetimehd driver.
I built one according to https://github.com/patjak/bcwc_pcie/wiki/Get-Started
and it works.
However, the image lacks the green channel (thus it is magenta).
Taking pictures works fine (all color channels are captured)

In Ubuntu 17.10 beta, Cheese does not provide an image from the camera
nor does it offer to attach to it in the prefs settings.
Machine: Macbook Pro Retina 13" with a Facetime HD (Broadcom 1570) PCIe
camera.
Hardware works under macOS -> Seems software or driver issue.
On a similar Macbook the image comes up immediately (with a Facetime
HD camera attached to USB)
