This seems to be more related to extensions than to the shell itself.
Maybe the shell could wrap Gio.Settings calls not to crash if the schema
isn't found, but in any case it's up to extensions writers to fix this.

I suspect a 'mouse click' on an unexpected area, near a chromium page
slider, to be the root cause of that issue: first the whole gnome-
shell session has been frozen, and then got that crash. Gnome-shell
reloaded itself.
