I booted Oneiric with the live cd & tried to perform a copy from the camera again.
In the attached screenshots you can see gvfsd loading painfully slowly the entire ~1Gb file in memory & stalling nautilus while it does so. Once the file is cached the copy continues to the attached usb flashkey. The good news is that the copy does not fail but it still is not what I would consider painless.
