Happens on ubuntumate 17.10 and ubuntustudio 17.10 the same way.

Why did this update without questioning the user? Do firefox itself
trigger the unattended update?

So remove the wrong version and install the older one, with setting HOLD

Title:
  Firefox 57 ignores package on halt

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  DISTRIB_RELEASE=17.10
  DISTRIB_CODENAME=artful
  DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 17.10"
  ii  firefox        57.0+build4- amd64

  Because of the horrible API change that destroyed over 10000 AddOns i
  decided to revert to the firefox 56 package.

  firefox_56.0+build6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  firefox-locale-de_56.0+build6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

  I removed the 57 packages by synaptic, installed both 56 .deb with
  sudo dpkg. After that the config must be renamed because of
  incompatibility. Than i had set the 56 packages at hold with synaptic.

  Shortly after reboot the 57 packages are back on the system, there was
  no update manager running. The chronic in synaptic shows the revert
  from last day and both packages at 57 including the lock that was set
  at the 56 version.

  Regression: If we have a packet management in ubuntu, all packages
  should be using that. All up- and downgrades should be visible in the
  chronic, but the secret upgrade is missing there.
