Basically skip all the nvidia repository ppa. Install lightdm. Purge gdm3. Follow manual install for the latest driver. Login with lightdm as Xorg. Now I have shining GTX1060 running on Ubuntu 17.10 :) BTW I noticed that the ppa drivers do not create /dev/dri/card0! that is the main issue (that loops in Xorg login).
