Title:
  [MIR] gnome-characters

Status in gnome-characters package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Availability
  ============
  Co-maintained and in sync with Debian GNOME.
  Built for all supported architectures.

  Rationale
  =========
  This app replaced gucharmap in core GNOME as of GNOME 3.20.

  When this MIR is approved, gnome-characters will replace gucharmap in
  the default Ubuntu install and gucharmap will be demoted to universe.
  gucharmap is displayed as "Character Map". gnome-characters is
  displayed as "Characters".

  Requested by Ubuntu Desktop Team here:
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2017-August/005093.html

  See Background Information.

  Security
  ========
  No known security issues

  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/gnome-characters
  https://launchpad.net/gnome-characters/+cve

  Uses gjs/mozjs which the Ubuntu Security Team reluctantly accepted into main
for gnome-shell
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/FAQ#mozjs

  Quality assurance
  =================
  - The Ubuntu Desktop Bugs team is subscribed.

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=product%3A"gnome-todo";

  No upstream tests or autopkgtests.

  Dependencies
  ============
  No universe binary dependencies

  Standards compliance
  ====================
  4.1.1

  Maintenance
  ===========
  - Actively developed upstream. Last release was 3.26.1 last month.

  The Debian source can be browsed at

https://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-gnome/desktop/unstable/gnome-characters/debian/

  A (currently) out of date view is at
  https://sources.debian.net/src/gnome-characters/unstable/debian/

  It is planned to convert the packaging repo to Git this year or next.

  Background information
  ======================
  While gucharmap is a traditional Character Map app with a "traditional"
design, the GNOME Characters app has a GNOME3 design. gucharmap is a complete
Unicode 10 and font browser; the Characters app has a more focused scope on
trying to show useful categorized emoji, symbols and punctuation.

  The Characters app is far more useful for browsing color emoji (an
  expected Ubuntu 18.04 feature) than the traditional gucharmap.
