Exact issue happens to me too. I haven't noticed it being intermittent.
I think it always happens. When you resize the window it's ok. As soon
as you 1-click maximize it, it happens.

  Not sure if this bug was introduced by the upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10, as I 
am rarely using the terminal in maximized mode.
