Oops, I had MUTTER_VERBOSE=1 and MUTTER_DEBUG=1. I also had
MUTTER_USE_LOGFILE=/tmp/mutterlogs, and there were mutter log messages
definitely going to /tmp, so it's surprising I was getting so much spam
in /var/log/syslog.

With those turned off, I'm not getting constant spam but I do still get
a lot of messages in syslog like so:

  gnome-shell wayland is spamming syslog with wl_ messages

  Whenever I run gnome-shell under wayland now in Ubuntu 18.04, I get
