Ok, here is how I was able to get my printer to work. Step 1: Go to https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins. Step 2: Download the plugin files (both 'run' and 'run.asc') for the hplip version that you are using. Step 3: Run hp-setup -g. Choose option p to specify a path to the plugin and use the path to the 'run' file that you downloaded in step 2. It may give you some errors, but install it anyway.
Now you should have a working printer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to hplip in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1749690 Title: hp-setup fails to install plugin Status in HPLIP: New Status in hplip package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in hplip package in Debian: New Bug description: My HP printer requires a binary driver and the only way to install it is to run hp-setup from hplip package.
