Title:
file browser will not scroll to the file with the leading letter as
  you press a key

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

I think 9.04 does have the feature of auto scrolling to the file
according to the key press if there is a file whose name has leading
char corresponding to the key you pressed. But somehow this nice
  feature is gone in 9.10
