My 'problem' is that I can't reproduce the issue. You now mentioned a few things, which indicate that your system isn't in the best shape.
While I have tested this on "Ubuntu with Xorg", you mentioned that you use "vanilla GNOME" (I suppose that vanilla GNOME means Wayland).
