Sounds like this might be related to bug 1765261, which is also about
the wrong characters being entered into password fields.

Maybe wait and see if the fix for that helps here.

Can't enter password in lock screen after running "gnome-shell

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Gnome Shell stops accepting mouse input from time to time, and when it
does I run "gnome-shell --replace" to get mouse control back. After
running this command, I can't log in because it's as if the ENTER key
is pressed every half second on the login screen. The lock screen
tells me that I typed in the wrong password and clears the password
input. I can't type my password in half a second.

I can workaround this by bug pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 which makes the lock
screen's password input form stop clearing its input. This isn't the
ideal workflow though because I have workarounds on workarounds.
