It's now improved in 18.04 with Firefox version 60.0.1+build2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1. Dragging the FF icon from the menu to the Desktop now creates a correctly sized icon. However, in "Preferred Applications" the icon is still a bit too large. See attached ff.png.
