Public bug reported:

Currently, the gnome-session binary is shipped in "gnome-session-bin
package", but it's registered in the alternatives system (as /usr/bin/x
-session-manager) by a completely unrelated "gnome-session" package
which ships configuration files for Ubuntu, Ubuntu-2d and other
sessions. Therefore, derivatives using gnome-session but not Unity and
not shipping the package with configuration files don't get gnome-
session binary registered in the alternatives system.
