changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.

and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Bug description:
Fresh install Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus, server distro, apt update ;
apt dist-upgrade -y ; apt install ubuntu-desktop -y ; shutdown -r now.
Firefox would not open, stating "profile cannot be loaded, may be
missing or inaccessible". Checked ownership of ~/.mozilla ; all files
were owned user:user and fine. Did a chown -R user.user ~/.mozilla
anyway, problem persisted. Then did ls -lah ~ | grep cache, saw
.cache owned root.root.
Did chown -R ~/.cache user.user, then Firefox opened fine.
