I installed ubuntu 9.10 from scratch and imported a big amount of emails from the gmail server to my pc. In that time I created some subfolders in inbox as well as some filters for the different mailing lists. The next day I try to create a new subfolder thunderbird freezes. I killed it and restarted, same thing.
