Hello David,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2012 and there have been several versions of
Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for
this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.

G

Title:
  Spaces changed when quoting operators

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Sometimes when I quote a message, the spacing is changed, especially
  when I quote code. E g, if the original poster wrote this:

  +                    if (pa_atou(pc + 1, &p) < 0 || p <= 0 || p >=
  0x10000) {

  When I choose to reply to this message, it gets quoted as this:

  > +                    if (pa_atou(pc + 1,&p)<  0 || p<= 0 || p>=
  0x10000) {

  As you can see, "p >=" has been changed to "p>=" (space removed), and
  "&p) < 0" has been changed to "&p)<  0" (space moved from before "<"
  to after, so there are two spaces between "&p)<" and "0").

  It does not seem to happen for all emails, so I'm not sure what
  actually triggers this misquoting. But given a particular email, it is
  consistent (i e, if I choose to reply to the same email twice, it
  either happens both times or not at all).
