Hello Frank,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.
You made this bug report in 2012 and there have been several versions of
Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.
Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for
this particular issue.
Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.

Title:
thunderbird is not asking/informing about unknown cert chain
Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I wanted to add an IMAP-account using IMAPS with an CAcert
certificate. For some reasons, Thunderbird doesn't seem to know the
cert, which might be ok. But instead of telling that it cannot verify
the certificate on adding a new account dialog, its just trying for
ever and pushing error message to error console:
"xxx.xx:993 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided.
(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)"
