Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.

When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated
logs by running only once:

Title:
  when setting firefox as default browser it becomes default app to open
  .PNG files

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,

  I've had the unpleasant surprise to discover that if I play with the
  default browser to something else like Chrome, Opera or Vivaldi and
  the revert to either Firefox or Firefox Nightly (firefox-trunk) then
  Firefox (or the nightly, depending on which I select as the new
  default) become the default program with which Nautilus (Files) tries
  to open .PNG files.

  I suppose it might be related to their .desktop files. For example,
  Chrome and Opera have these Mimetypes specified, respectively:

  MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml_xml;image/webp;x-scheme-
  handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp;

  MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml_xml;x-scheme-
  handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp;

  Firefox and Firefox Nightly:

MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;application/rss+xml;application/rdf+xml;image/gif;image/jpeg;image/png;x
  -scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp;x
  -scheme-handler/chrome;video/webm;application/x-xpinstall;

MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;application/rss+xml;application/rdf+xml;image/gif;image/jpeg;image/png;x
  -scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp;x
  -scheme-handler/chrome;video/webm;application/x-xpinstall;

  (they're the same)

  So I edited /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop and removed the
  "image/png" bit and solved the problem for Firefox. The un-modified
  firefox-trunk.desktop file still causes the problem. Weirdly enough,
  the default application to open .jpg files does not change.

  Why does the firefox.desktop file require all the additonal "noise"
  when we have plenty of other applications to handle those mimetypes?
  The other browsers seem to do just fine with their shorter MimeType
  lines.
