Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket? If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug? If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once): apport-collect 147179 and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. That settings were lost during upgrade to thunderbird 2 (during upgrade to gutsy-beta). When I opened window to change the settings (right click on toolbar -> customize) i realized that it IS checked "small icons" and there IS proper option in selection list. I've checked, and selected the same option again and it's ok now. I remember that I had this situation once in the past but I don't remember the details.
