Title:
Gnome Shell or X disappears with last log message
  _st_paint_shadow_with_opacity: assertion 'shadow_pipeline != NULL'
  failed

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
gnome-shell or X is disappearing (crashing?), with frequency of roughly 1
time per 2 days. This last time it happened when my partner was switching
users (we have 2 users on this box "Beast"). This is a new Ubuntu 17.10 setup
on i7700/NVidia 1060 with 3 monitors plugged to 1060. The symptom is black
screen with lines like
[ OK ] Started User Manager for UID 121
  and unresponsive keyboard.

Hard drive was blinking so I tried and I was able to SSH into the
  machine and run ubuntu-bug.

The log (tail -c4000 syslog) is:

The Infrared Remote is not relevant as it was crashing before I
  plugged it in (just today).

  I tried to run

     ls -ltr /var/crash/

but it gives me no crash files as of today.
