Using Firefox 61, there is an option to delete unwanted items by right clicking 
on unwanted items in the bookmarks sidebar.

Bug description:
  I have recently found that in the latest version of Firefox (Firefox
  46.0.1) on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME 3.20 that if I remove the
  pre-added (they were there by default) bookmark folders from the
  bookmark menu by right-clicking on them and choosing the remove
  option, that unnecessary separators remain even though they should be
  automatically removed and there seems no way from this menu to remove
  them. Here is an example:
