Hi Jan,
I apologize but I do not understand your comments: "closing to
message-indicator" and "close the program to the message-indicator"

Is it that you want to be able to close the Thunderbird program
completely but you would like the message indicator in the middle of the
bar at the top of the screen to continue to give you indications when
new messages comes in?

Or are you referring to the Thunderbird icon in the left bar (on the
left side of the screen) that formerly had an indicator of the number of
unread messages?

You are in Ubuntu 16.04. Are you planning to upgrade to 18.04 or will you stay
with 16.04? The layout is different in 18.04 since it is the gnome desktop and
not unity any longer.
Thanks
G
