Hello Denville,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made
this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and cups have been updated since then.
Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run
the following (only once):
apport-collect 1665753
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.
Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and cups better.

Title:
Printer LPD/LPR option not present in Ubuntu 16.04 / 64 bit
Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
This option is required to connect to literally thousands of legacy
dot-matrix and other simple ascii printing devices such as roll
printers and ticket machines, in use for example in airports
throughout the world. I cannot select LPD/LPR printer any longer in
the desktop GUI, and I can't find if and how to do it from the command
line (or even editing a configuration file).
I have tried various alternatives such as IPP generic text-only but
nothing gets to the printer, typically the spooler reports printer
idle but not ready. The printers all have basic Centronics parallel
interface, connected to the network using LPD/LPR print servers, not a
chance of changing this infrastructure which has worked flawlessly and
under Windows (even W10) for years.
Thanks.
