Title:
  DNS checked before hosts file?

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and am on the work network via ethernet.

On the work network the domain *.jcrawford.americas.nokia.com points
to my workstation at my desk. On my laptop I also have my dev
environment setup and have the following in my hosts file

  127.0.0.1 desktop.jcrawford.americas.nokia.com
  api.jcrawford.americas.nokia.com mobile.jcrawford.americas.nokia.com
  static.jcrawford.americas.nokia.com

I have restarted my browser and even restarted my system. When I am
on the network with my laptop and hit that address in my browser it
hits my WORKSTATION computer at my desk rather than the local apache
installed on my laptop. I have verified this several times by
checking the access.log on my workstation.

I also verified that it was doing the network DNS lookup prior to
checking the hosts file in this manner.

  1.) Disconnected the network cable
  2.) Cleared browser cache
  3.) hit the URL
4.) YAY I got the apache page saying It Works!

I then plugged in the network cable and cleared my browser cache. On
my workstation I tailed my access.log. I hit the URL in my laptop
browser viola it hit my workstation again.

I am not sure if this is a bug with firefox or if firefox is making a
system call which is failing to follow the proper order on Ubuntu
  10.10
