You should be able to get spellchecking working by installing the
“hunspell-ru” package.

Bug description:
I have thunderbird-locale-ru installed. Moreover, Add-ons manager says
that "Russian (RU) Language Pack" is installed.
Nevertheless I have only "English (United States)" in Spelling button
menu when composing a message.
Russian texts are entirely marked as wrong spelling.
