Mozilla chairwoman Mitchell Baker revealed recently that Mozilla would
like to drop Thunderbird completely:

As Xenial comes with 5 years support, Ubuntu will be unable to provide
security updates for Thunderbird.
I think it's time to either change the default email client to
something new, or revert to Evolution completely.
