gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in
meta_plugin_manager_xevent_filter() from x_event_source_dispatch()

Bug description:
I can login using unity but when I choose gnome it takes while and the
screen turns black and eventually it brings me back to the login page.
this only started happening after upgrading to ubuntu 17.10.
I've tried removing the .Xauthority file. I've also tried purging
Nvidia drivers.
