I no longer have a Canon printer, so I'm afraid I can't provide any information on whether this is still an issue.

This is no longer the case in 15.10 -- I need to manually add it by entering bnjp://my.printers.ip.address. This bug is present both on Ubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome.
