One (temporary) option is also to downgrade Thunderbird back to the previous 
version (in my case 52.7).
I used 'Synaptic Package Manager' to downgrade and lock in the old version. 
I'll wait a while before updating. 

There may be better solutions posted already but this is also one
possibility for those who don't mind to wait a while.
