Photosmart 7762 will do one print job then freezes until restart

Bug description:
Binary package hint: hplip
Trying to print from a HP Photosmart 7762.
I plug the device in.
A first print job will work fine.
After this nothing seems to work, subsequent jobs eventually getting a device
communication error (5012) then device busy (5021)
Restarting the printer (power off and on) or restarting the computer will
allow another job to be printed.
Sometimes following a restart a small part of the document or a page with
postscript code (?) along the top, will be printed.
Please tell me what debugging I can provide.
