firefox process hangs and won't die

Bug description:
Binary package hint: firefox
Periodically on ubuntu 10.04 firefox will hang (window grays out)
after initiating a command. All firefox windows hang and are
unresponsive. I attempt to restart firefox and am unable to kill all
of the processes even with sudo:

The problem does not affect Opera.
I attempt to 'sync' the filesystem before rebooting and sync hangs as well.
I have to shutdown the machine using the power button.
This happens at least once a week. I'm running on a toshiba nb305
netbook.
