The bug was reproducible yesterday and was experienced previously. Today, after booting from last night's shutdown, the problem is no longer manifesting itself.
Note that Unity has been removed in favour of Gnome3 as per the following procedure: sudo apt-get install gdm3 sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm sudo reboot sudo apt-get remove unity sudo apt-get remove lightdm sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop Docky is now the launcher.
