Ok, great. Even if that's just a workaround, I close this bug. We intend
to update ibus-libpinyin soon, and hopefully that will take care of this
subtle issue.

Title:
Chinese input fails to input if you don't select 1st candidate and
persists
Status in ibus-libpinyin package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
1) Ubuntu release
Description: Ubuntu 18.10
Release: 18.10
2) Package version
ibus-libpinyin:
Installed: 1.10.0-1
Candidate: 1.10.0-1
Version table:
*** 1.10.0-1 500

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) Typing pinyin and selecting first candidate works. Selecting
another candidate results in inputting the number of the candidate
instead of the Chinese character. Chinese input also fails to continue
working until you switch back and forth (Pinyin -> English -> Pinyin).
4) Being able to select and input all characters displayed in the
candidate window & Chinese input continually working.
