Printer does not print following system update

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS amd64. I set up my printer, an HP
LaserJet 1100 and can print a test page using the "Printers" icon
under the System Settings. The printer is connected to the computer by
the old fashioned many-pin connector (parallel port?) Following system
update I can no longer print a test page.
Please pardon me, I'm not technical enough to know what package caused
this problem upon updating. However, I do have a list of all or most
of the printer related packages that were installed before the update
caused the problem.
