thunderbird 12.0.1 menu's not usable on lucid 10.04

Bug description:
after the big update to thunderbird 12 i have several users with a
recurring complaint, several times a day they would not be able to use
the dropdown menu's in thunderbird....
the dropdown menu , for instance "file" or "edit", does show but the
listed items are not selectable/clickable.
this problem insists until thunderbird is restarted and will re-occur
several times a day.
not sure how to collect more debugging information
