I used to work amount this with a symbolic from Desktop to
/run/user/${userid}/gvfs/smb-
share:server=${servername},share=${sharename}
Now that doesn't work either.
After attaching the file, you can still double click on it, in the open
draft. That opens fine. But when trying to send the message, thunderbird
complains that it can't attache the file.
Copying the file to Desktop first works fine. Also, if the symbolic link
is from local, to local, then it works. so the symbolic link does not
appear to be the issue.
Using Thunderbird 60.4 on Unbuntu 18.04
I think the symbolic link workaround stopped working after I upgraded
from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04
18.04 does "add a feature though". It does show the "+ Other locations"
entry in left panel of the "attach files" dialog. However, when using
that the same thing happens, it fails. See attached screenshots.

Cannot attach Network Shares in Thunderbird

Bug description:
Suddenly (and I'm not sure if this was after a recent Ubuntu update or
a Thunderbird one, Thunderbird no longer shows "Network" locations in
the 'Attach File(s)' window. Normally below "Bookmarks" is another
section "Network" which shows my network locations, however this
entire section is now missing.
There is now no way of attaching a file existing anywhere on the
network to an outgoing email. Nautilus can see and access all the
network locations 100% fine. Drag/drop into the outgoing email from
Nautilus will attach a network file to the email but Thunderbird
refuses to send it and throws up a "Send Message Error":
Sending of the message failed.
There was an error attaching smb://mypc/my documents/myfolder/file.xls.
Please check that you have access to the file.
Attaching network files in Thunderbird and on Ubuntu 14.04 has worked
fine for two years. I'm a "user" and really not that au-fait with the
inner workings of Linux so I hope this helps.
