It gets even more confusing for me when I have my locale set to the UK,
but my time-zone is Japan, so I end up with "金曜日, 08 3月" for today's
date. In other words, it's Japanese, but with the UK spacing and
ordering of weekday-date-month (instead of month-date-weekday, with no
commas or spaces). This just ends up confusing everyone.

Title:
Lock screen day/time display does not honor locale

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The new display of the day and time on the lock screen in trusty is
nice, but it shows e.g. "Tue 16:26" (note 24-hour clock). This format
should honor the user's locale, i.e. my time applet displays "Tue Mar
  4 4:26 PM".
