Thank you for your bug report. That's not a bug though but the way the ubuntu session is set up, you can install/log into the gnome stock session if you prefer that experience

It seems that the extension "switch" in gnome-tweaks has no effect: even when turned off changing the extension settings (by clicking on the gear icon) does change which icons are shown on the desktop. This also means that the extension can't be fully disabled, removing all the desktop icons. Note that turning off the "personal folder" and "trash" icons is not enough: the contents of ~/Desktop are still shown. Uninstalling gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons is not an option, as it is a dependency of ubuntu-desktop-minimal. This is observed on Disco with gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons 19.01.1-1.
