In my case, I have a laptop with a dock and an external monitor plugged to the dock. Every time I put the laptop back in the dock, I have to start the display properties, re-adjust the screen layout (external monitor to the left, laptop to the right) and click "apply" -- these settings should be remembered. Also after hitting "apply", the X display is garbled (parts of the laptop screen are displayed on the external monitor), which forces me to disconnect and reconnect for everything to work fine.
