I'm not sure this is still somehow relevant, since the mentioned behavior cannot be reproduced after upgrading to 11.10. I think this bug report can be simply resolved.

Then I renamed the file, and after restarting Empathy has created a new file accounts.cfg with the old (i.e. Nickname=oldvalue) information.
