I tried this more elaborate version of the same thing: #! /bin/sh kstart --desktop 1 firefox & kstart --desktop 2 kmail & kstart --desktop 3 konsole & exit but the behavior was the same. I'm running Kubuntu 14.10 with release 4:4.14.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.10~ppa1 of kde-runtime.
