It sounds like you're reporting two problems:
* Low resolution graphics by default (using the nouveau driver I guess)
* Installing the Nvidia driver results in no login screen, unless you
disable Wayland.
Since the second problem is already covered by bug 1798790, we should
make this bug about the first issue only. But since you've reported this
bug with a different driver installed, after the first problem is gone,
this bug report is no longer valid.
To continue discussing the first issue, if you want to, please uninstall
the Nvidia driver to reintroduce the resolution problem, and then open a
new bug.
To continue discussing the second issue, please use bug 1798790 instead.

Title:
Initial installation does not allow high graphics resolution. Requires
disabling Wayland and using Nvidia proprietary driver.
Status in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
1. Booting the system from USB 3.0 stick does not show any indication
of graphics problems.
2. Upon the installation to a hard drive, the graphics resolution is
below standard and cannot be changed in the system settings.
3. By installing the Nvidia driver and rebooting the system, I find
that there is no graphics desktop available; apparently, level 5 was
not fully reached. There is a workaround for this. I can try to press
CTRL+F2 and then CTRL+F1 and the high-resolution graphical desktop
becomes apparent. Switching terminals allows me to go to the graphical
session.
4. Disabling Wayland in the appropriate configuration file allows the
system to become fully functional.
