Title:
vte does not support xterm's REP (repeat characters)

Status in vte2.91 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  This only affects xenial (libvte2.91-0.42.5):

Steps to reproduce: (e.g.) use gnome-terminal on xenial to login to
a remote machine via SSH. The remote is an up-to-date server with ncurses6.
The bug is seen on a variety of programs using ncurses, due to VTE not being
  100% xterm compatible.

  Here's the bug report:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=787701

As seen in the bug report above, a patch has been backported up to v.0.46
Xenial's using 0.42 an is therefore affected.
  Here's the 'original' patch:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/vte/commit/e81ecf7408a943566196d03b605a05a197381068

And attached is a patch that applies to 0.42

Notice, that src/vteseq-n.cc needs to be re-generated.

  Build- & run-tested on 16.04.6, this resolves the ncurses/gnome-
  terminal issues
