I used to have this same problem with the flickering mouse cursor on the main display. The solution which Quoc Khanh Le (qkle) mentioned in this comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg- server/+bug/1724307/comments/24 worked for me! I use a laptop Dell Inspiron 7559 with Ubuntu 18.04. My kernel is 4.15.0-55-generic.
