Yes, updating the user-dirs.dirs did help, after changing the path, the bug with zsh is solved now. I believe we can close the issue. Thank you, Daniel.

Today, I turned on the computer and the icons were there - not only from the "~/Desktop" directory, but all of the icons from my home folder. The icons cannot be turned off. 'gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons' returns 'false'. Additionally, my shell (zsh, oh-my-zsh) starts very slow now and with each prompt (enter without a command entered), it takes about 2-3 seconds before the user> shows again. The icons "blink" during this as they're being refreshed. I am using Ubuntu 19.04, freshly installed a couple days ago.
